Modelling the Spatial Distribution of DEM Error
نویسنده
چکیده
Assessment of a DEM’s quality is usually undertaken by deriving a measure of DEM accuracy – how close the DEM’s elevation values are to the true elevation. Measures such as Root Mean Squared Error and standard deviation of the error are frequently used. These measures summarise elevation errors in a DEM as a single value. A more detailed description of DEM accuracy would allow better understanding of DEM quality and the consequent uncertainty associated with using DEMs in analytical applications. The research presented addresses the limitations of using a single root mean squared error (RMSE) value to represent the uncertainty associated with a DEM by developing a new technique for creating a spatially distributed model of DEM quality – an accuracy surface. The technique is based on the hypothesis that the distribution and scale of elevation error within a DEM are at least partly related to morphometric characteristics of the terrain. The technique involves generating a set of terrain parameters to characterise terrain morphometry and developing regression models

The aim of this study was modelling the spatial distribution ofLilium ledebourii (Baker) Boiss. based on ecological characteristics, in order to predict potential habitats for conservation of a rare plant. Knowledge of the spatial distributions of rare and threatened species and the underlying ecological factors plays an important role in regional conservation assessments and development planni...
متن کاملDigital Elevation Modelling for natural hazard risk assessment
Introduction The application of geographic information systems (GISs) to natural hazard risk management is a relatively new and emerging science. Coppock (1995) notes that GIS has made a contribution to various facets of natural hazard risk management since risk is a multi-dimensional and multidisciplinary phenomenon, which have a spatial component, whatever their initial focus. Hence, the succ...
متن کاملModelling potential impacts of climate change on the oak spatial distribution (Case study: Ilam and Lorestan provinces)
Examining the effects of climate change on the oak spatial distribution, as the main species of Zagros forests and its ecological and economic values is of significant importance. Here, we used species distribution models for simulating current climatic suitability of oak and its potential changes in 2050 and 2070. For this purpose, five regression-based and machine learning approaches, four cl...
متن کاملEffects of Digital Elevation Models (DEM) Spatial Resolution on Hydrological Simulation
Digital Elevation Model is one of the most important data for watershed modeling whit hydrological models that it has a significant impact on hydrological processes simulation. Several studies by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) as useful Tool have indicated that the simulation results of this model is very sensitive to the quality of topographic data. The aim of this study is evaluati...
متن کاملAccuracy assessment of digital elevation model using stochastic simulation
Various methods have been applied to generate Digital Elevation Models (DEM) but whatever method is used, DEM estimates will always be affected by errors. Comparing interpolated values with the actual elevation values, obtained with a high precision field survey, allows us to assess DEM accuracy. At every spot height location it is possible to subtract the actual values from the DEM values to o...
